James M. Glover, March 8th 1853, Edward C. Glover February 4th
1864:
Charles signed this document with his X mark, which was surprising as his occupation had been book agent, which suggested was able to read and write.
The naming of James M. Glover as Charles Glover’s son, collaborates the marriage record of James Glover and Jennie Stott, that also lists Charles as his father and Cordelia Little as his mother. And it also agrees with the marriage record of Frank J. Glover and Nellie Stockman, wherein Frank also listed James Glover as his father. James M. Glover also lived with Charles Glover in Rochester, New York in 1872-1874 and again in 1879, as shown in the Rochester City Directories.
While I had long suspected that James M. Glover was the son of Charles Glover and his first wife Cordelia Little, this is the first primary evidence that Charles and Cordelia were indeed James M. Glover's parents.

James M. Glover 1855 - 1930 Rochester NY & Seattle, WA
BACKGROUND:
James M. Glover appears suddenly in the
Rochester, New York city directories in 1872. He then disappears in 1880. The only records of James M. Glover between
1872-1880 are listings of him each year in the Rochester City Directory; he
does not appear on any U.S. Federal or New York State censuses for this time
period. James M Glover’s and Hatti L.
Foster’s son Frank John Glover was born in 1876 in Rochester. In 1880, James leaves Rochester reputedly for
New York City. Where James came from and
what happened to him after 1880 has stymied me for years.
In November 2015, autosomal DNA tests
of 5 of Frank John Glover’s grandchildren resulted in 4 of them matching a grandson
and a great-grandson (father and son) of James Mezervey Glover born about
1854-5 in Rochester New York or Ontario Canada. The match places the oldest cousin generation
match at ½ second cousins. James Mezervey Glover first appears in this family’s
records in 1880, with his marriage to Jennie Stott in Brooklyn, New York. The
descendants of James Merzervey Glover had no knowledge of him prior to this
time.
The DNA connection provides a working
hypothesis that the 2 men, James M. Glover and James Mezervey Glover, are one
and the same. However, additional
research to support the connection via the paper trail and additional DNA
testing is necessary before a conclusion based on exhaustive research can be
reached.
RESEARCH
QUESTION:
Was the James M. Glover, father of
Frank John Glover born 1876 in Rochester New York, the same man as James
Mezervey Glover who married Jennie Stott in 1880 in Brooklyn, NY and who died
in Seattle Washington in 1930?

ANYALYSIS FROM TIMELINE:
The combined timeline demonstrates that
the lives of James M. Glover and James Mezervey Glover do not overlap. Where one set of identifying records for the James
M. Glover ends in 1880, records for James Mezervey Glover begins. Fortunately the marriage record for James’
second marriage provides the names of his parents. His father Charles Glover is the same Charles
Glover that James was living with before his marriage to wife #1 Hattie Foster
and the birth of their child. No other
James Glover was found living in Rochester New York during the 1872-1880 time
period.
The DNA connection, between the 2
families of James Glover appears to support the hypothesis that he was the
father of all 6 children by 2 wives.
However, without additional evidentiary support through traditional
research and additional DNA testing one cannot be sure that the existing DNA
results do not lead to some other family connection. At this writing, the result of autosomal DNA
testing is pending for a descendant of James and Jennie Glover’s son John
Squire Glover.
Y-DNA testing of other male descendants
of James Mezervey Glover, Sr. may be necessary to support the autosomal
conclusions. The only male descendant
of James M. Glover and Hattie Foster has already taken the Y-DNA test, so
testing male descendants from James’ union with Jennie Stott should conclusive
prove or disprove a common Glover male ancestor.
Research Methodology:
The recent DNA match leading to the new branch of James M.
Glover’s family requires additional DNA and traditional research to prove or
disprove the link between the 2 families.
James M Glover only had 1 child (Frank John Glover) by his
first wife Hattie L. Foster. Years of
research into Frank John Glover’s family, descendants, his wife’s family and
his maternal line provides a relatively complete picture of this family.
However, only the most rudimentary information is known
about James Mezervey Glover, his second wife Jennie Stott and their 5 children:
Jennie E. Glover, Charles John Glover, John Squire Glover, James Mezervey
Glover Jr., and Helen Cordelia Glover and their descendants.
In order to establish familial links between these 2
families the FAN approach will be used. This means the following families need
additional research: the 5 children of James and Jennie, Jennie Stott’s family
including parents and siblings, James Glover’s maternal line including Cordelia
Little, her parents and siblings, and Charles Glover including his second wife
Kate/Catherine and their son Edward C. Glover.
Using DNA testing to prove or disprove the theory that the
children of these 2 James Glover families were fathered by the same man is essential. At this time, a descendant of another of
James and Jennie Glover’s sons is in the Ancestry.com lab.
If additional descendants of James Glover’s children
are located they can also be tested.
Nothing is known about James’ father Charles Glover’s ancestral family,
so DNA testing of James’ maternal line through his mother Cordelia Little would
go far in solving the questions surrounding James’ offspring. If Cordelia Little’s DNA was passed to
descendants of all 6 of James M. Glover’s children it should prove that they
all had the same father. An added
measure would be to DNA test some of Cordelia Little’s sibling’s
descendants.
An Excel spreadsheet of all names, dates, locations,
connections, and sources appearing on all documents for any of the family
members and neighbors of James Glover’s should be establish. Using a spreadsheet will allow the data to be
manipulated to find associations among the various people and places.
A 3 pronged approach will be used to resolve the question
about James M. Glover and James Mezervey Glover.
1. Basic research:
of all the 6 children (see Table 3) including: vital records, censuses, land,
newspaper, and probate.
2. Autosomal DNA testing:
a. Tracing
the lines of the 3 children of James and Jennie Glover whose living descendants
have not taken DNA tests to find descendants willing to take an autosomal DNA
test.
b. Trace
the siblings of Cordelia Little’s siblings (see Table 4) to locate living
descendants willing to take an autosomal DNA test.
c. Trace
all children of Charles Glover and both his wives, Cordelia Glover and Kate or
Catherine (See Table 5) for descendants willing to take an autosomal DNA test.
3. FAN approach: Develop
a spreadsheet to document all the family, associates and neighbors of James
Glover, his wives Hattie L. Foster and Jennie Stott families, Charles Glover,
Cordelia M. Little and her parents, neighbors of each from the available
censuses and all found documents.
